Poor credit banking – is it actually possible? In short, yes if you have messed up your financial history with a series of bad financial moves, you can still open up a new account. However, there are a few things you should know before you start looking around for a bank.

The first thing to know is that if your credit is bad, you can be sure that it’s going to be difficult or outright impossible to open a regular bank account. The reason is that most banks will not look at your actual “credit history” but a record of your previous banking history. If you have problems over at Bank A – say cashing a series of bad checks or defaulting on a couple personal loans – Bank B will not allow you to open a new account.

This can put you in a bit of a bind. You’ve made financial mistakes – we all have. But a banking account is a basic necessity if you want to function in our modern society. No bank account can mean you’ll have a major headache each day.

So what can you do about it?

Well, you can first look around to find banks that would look at your poor credit history. This is harder to do these days because the past few years most banks are now looking at your banking history when you seek to open a new account.

The other option then is to look around online and open an internet bank account. Many internet bank accounts will allow you to open an account even if your credit history is bad. Be aware that internet banking may be more expensive than traditional banking.
